For nearly 40 years, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra has been dedicated to providing superior orchestral training for dedicated and talented young musicians.
Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO) is a high-level orchestral training programme for talented musicians aged 22 and under. Alumni are found in virtually every major performing organization in Canada, and many have embarked on successful solo, chamber, and orchestral careers worldwide.
Founded in 1974 by Victor Feldbrill, the TSYO has become one of the most important education programmes of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO). Conducted by Maestro Alain Trudel, and coached by an enthusiastic faculty of TSO musicians, the youth orchestra has enjoyed the support and nurture of the TSO for nearly 40 years. The TSO and TSYO collaboration is strengthened by their annual “Side-by-Side” performance onstage at Roy Thomson Hall.
The Youth Orchestra’s affiliation with the TSO has ensured a number of exciting masterclasses led by world-renowned guest artists and conductors. Recent guests include: Henning Kraggerud, Vadim Gluzman, James Ehnes Colin Carr, Pinchas Zukerman, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Pekka Kuusisto, Yo-Yo Ma, Richard Stolzman, Wynton Marsalis, Christian Lindberg, Colin Currie, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Gunther Herbig, Sir Andrew Davis, and TSO Music Director, Peter Oundjian to name only a few.
Other TSYO activities include the annual Concerto Competition, from which the winners are given the opportunity to perform a solo with the TSO or the TSYO. There is also the annual camp weekend at Bark Lake, as well as a chamber music concert hosted by the Associates of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
The Youth Orchestra has toured extensively within Canada and abroad. Tours include: Banff, the Canadian Arctic, Quebec, Texas, Massachusetts, California, Japan and Europe. In May 2012, the TSYO will tour to British Columbia with performances in Vancouver, Nanaimo and Victoria.
With a commitment to performance excellence, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra is regarded as one of Canada’s leading training orchestras, and ranks as one of the top youth orchestras in North America.
