For nearly 40 years, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra has been dedicated to providing a high-level orchestral experience for talented young people aged 22 and under.
The TSYO programme provides a unique and powerful life-enriching experience, encouraging high achievement no matter what career path participants pursue. The TSYO has a close affiliation with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra: TSO musicians serve as coaches throughout the season; TSO Guest Artists lead masterclasses for TSYO members; and the TSYO performs annually with the TSO in a side-by-side concert at Roy Thomson Hall. The TSYO is led by the TSO’s RBC Resident Conductor, Shalom Bard, and coached by TSO musicians Keith Atkinson (Woodwind Coach), Harcus Hennigar (Brass Coach), Young Dae Park (Violin Coach), Theresa Rudolph (Viola Coach), David Hetherington (Cello Coach), Paul Rogers (Double Bass Coach), and David Kent (Percussion Coach).
The Youth Orchestra’s affiliation with the TSO has ensured a number of exciting masterclasses led by world-renowned guest artists and conductors. Recent guests include: Henning Kraggerud, Vadim Gluzman, James Ehnes Colin Carr, Pinchas Zukerman, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Pekka Kuusisto, Yo-Yo Ma, Richard Stolzman, Wynton Marsalis, Christian Lindberg, Colin Currie, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Gunther Herbig, Maxim Vengerov, Sir Andrew Davis, and TSO Music Director, Peter Oundjian to name only a few.
The Youth Orchestra has toured extensively within Canada and abroad. Tours include: Banff, the Canadian Arctic, Quebec, Texas, Massachusetts, California, Japan and Europe. In May 2012, the TSYO traveled to British Columbia with performances in Vancouver, Nanaimo and Victoria.
