Associate Principal Flute

Kayla Burggraf joins the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal Flute in the 2024/25 season.

Prior to her appointment in Toronto, Kayla played piccolo in the Kansas City Symphony for five seasons, was a fellow with the New World Symphony, Principal Flute of the Des Moines and Ann Arbor Symphonies and a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She has performed as guest principal flute with many great orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony for their 2023 European Residencies Tour and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for their 2024 European Festivals Tour. Equally at home as a piccoloist she has performed as guest solo piccolo with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic among others.

Kayla has performed as soloist with the Kansas City Symphony, Des Moines Symphony, New York Symphonic Ensemble Japan Tour, Chelsea Music Festival (NYC) and with Rice University's Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra and the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra as a result of winning their respective concerto competitions. While a member of the Kansas City Symphony she spearheaded the formation of a solo recital series that the orchestra has since continued and served on many committees with her work focused on artistic progress in the organization as well as audience development particularly for young professionals. As a member of the Noctua Wind Quintet she has performed at the Kennedy Center and won prizes at the Fischoff, Coleman, Chamber Music Yellow Springs, and JC Arriaga competitions.

Kayla earned her master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Robert Langevin in the Orchestral Performance Program. She studied with Leone Buyse at Rice University where she received her bachelor’s degree with Distinction in Research and Creative Works. She has been influenced by additional studies with Jennifer Gunn, Stefán Höskuldsson, Stephanie Mortimore and Renée Siebert.
